Summer Skincare Mistakes You Might Be Making(and How to Fix Them)

Summer is here—and while we all love a good glow, the sun, sweat, and heat can seriously stress your skin if you’re not careful. As an esthetician, I see the same mistakes pop up every summer, so let’s break down the top ones (and how to avoid them!).

1.

Skipping SPF (or only applying it once)

This is a big one. SPF is non-negotiable—even on cloudy days or when you’re just “running errands.”

Fix it:

Reapply SPF every 2 hours when outdoors. I recommend keeping a brush-on powder SPF (like Colorescience) or compact (like SkinBetter) in your bag so it’s easy to touch up without ruining your makeup.

2.

Using heavy products that clog pores

Thick moisturizers or occlusive oils can trap sweat and bacteria, leading to congestion and breakouts.

Fix it:

Switch to lightweight, hydrating products like gel moisturizers and water-based serums. I love Hydrinity’s Hyacyn Active and SkinBetter’s Hydration Boost during the warmer months.

3.

Not cleansing properly after sweating

Leaving sweat on your skin (especially mixed with sunscreen and makeup) is a fast track to clogged pores.

Fix it:

Double cleanse after a workout or long day outside. Use a gentle gel or creamy cleanser followed by a mild exfoliating cleanser 2-3x a week.

4.

DIY exfoliation overload

More sun often means more texture, but overdoing scrubs or exfoliants in summer can damage your skin barrier—especially after sun exposure.

Fix it:

Stick to professional treatments (hello DiamondGlow!) or gentle enzyme exfoliants at home. Avoid acids after beach days!

5.

Thinking your skin doesn’t need hydration because it’s oily

Heat can make your skin oilier, but that doesn’t mean it’s hydrated.

Fix it:

Use a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid to plump and balance your skin. Dehydration can actually trigger more oil production!

Final Thoughts

If your skin is acting up this summer, you’re not alone. But with a few adjustments, you can keep your glow healthy and long-lasting.
